Our Aim

LXNIGHTS is a research group created in July 2014 with the main objective of exploring the urban night by taking an interdisciplinary approach (geography, sociology, anthropology, history). Over the first two years, our research aimed to examine the role of nighttime leisure economy in the urban change of two historic neighborhoods of Lisbon city center, namely Bairro Alto and Cais do Sodré. In 2016, LXNIGHTS became an international research network on the urban night, encompassing up to 22 scholars from 9 countries from EU and the Americas. In 2019, LXNIGHTS and some scholars from Canada and Mexico founded the International Night Studies Network (https://nightologists.hypotheses.org/). Since then, we have redesigned our LXNIGHTS, with a special focus on the urban night of Portugal and Spain. In this new phase of our research group, we aim at identifying, examining, and assessing spatial, social, economic, cultural, public health, and governance-related impacts of COVID-19 pandemic in both nightlife industry and nighttime creative culture sector. In doing so, we are strongly committed in enhancing and fostering (bio)safer, more inclusive, more egalitarian, more resilient, and more sustainable nights. We are actively participating (as partners as well as coordinators) in various research proposals at a European level, together with our colleagues from Spain, France, the Kingdom Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Hungary, Finland, Canada, and Mexico. LXNIGHTS is supported by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. through individual research contracts (Stimulus Program for Scientific Employment), and is hosted at Centro Interdisciplinar de Ciências Sociais da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa.
